The Proton compatibility layer has helped bring many PC games to Linux, and it’s updated regularly with new features and improvements. Now, Proton 10.0-4 has arrived with 19 new compatible games and a pile of bug fixes.
Proton is based on the Wine open-source project, and Wine 11 was just released with significant performance improvements, better support for Wayland and 64-bit ARM devices, and many more changes. Proton is still using Wine 10 as a foundation, though—we’ll have to wait a bit longer for the upgrade to Wine 11.
Proton 10.0-4 adds several more games to the list of playable titles, all of which were previously functional on Proton Experimental. The full list is below, with a mix of standard PC titles and VR games. Linux gamers can finally do virtual reality medical malpractice in Surgeon Simulator: Experience Reality or play through some dungeons in Fellowship.

Many other games have received bug fixes, including Far Cry 5, Age of Empires IV Anniversary Edition, Marvel Rivals, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, CHRONO TRIGGER, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. A glitch that caused a long wait on launch for many Xbox Game Studios games has also been fixed, which affected Avowed, Grounded 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and The Outer Worlds 2. The update also fixes 7.1 audio channel mapping in Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and “potentially many other games.”

Wine vs. Bottles vs. Proton: Which Is Best for Windows Apps on Linux?
Having trouble figuring out what to use to get your Windows apps and games running in Linux? Let’s compare three oft-discussed applications: Wine, Bottles, and Valve’s Proton.
Proton 10.0-4 includes updated versions of VKD3D, the Direct3D 12 to Vulkan translation layer, as well as Wine Mono 10.4.1. Those components helped make those compatibility fixes possible, and hopefully the upcoming Wine 11 upgrade will make more progress.
This Proton update should roll out to Steam on Linux soon, if it hasn’t already. You can also change which version of Proton a game uses by right-clicking on a game, and then navigating to Properties > Compatibility.
